El Grupo de Investigación Traslacional en Enfermedades Infecciosas Pediátricas (ITEIP) del Instituto de Investigación Hospital 12 de Octubre es un grupo emergente que centra su interés en la investigación clínica sobre las enfermedades infecciosas pediátricas y la susceptibilidad del huésped a las infecciones.

Las áreas que más ha trabajado son la infección por el VIH en el niño, infecciones por S. aureus, las infecciones congénitas (principalmente citomegalovirus, toxoplasmosis y Chagas), tos ferina y tuberculosis y las enfermedades infecciosas tropicales.

Otras líneas prioritarias del grupo son las infecciones nosocomiales y el desarrollo de programas de optimización del uso de antibióticos. El grupo tiene especial interés en promover la realización de ensayos clínicos en pediatría y participa activamente en la coordinación de la Unidad de Ensayos Clínicos Pediátricos.

International Projects

Team-COACH – «Training and capacity building in antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention and control in children through an interactive electronic tool and a European collaborative group»

Team-COACH project aims at tackling the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) issue in the pediatric settings, both in hospitals and in primary care structures, by providing training, and increasing the capacity building in healthcare workers in Spain, Italy and Greece. Its main goal is to reduce unnecessary and inappropriate antibiotic prescribing, and inadequate infection prevention & control (IPC) which are two leading causes of AMR. This will be done through the creation of an electronic training tool as well as a network of healthcare centers where the tool will be disseminated.

EMPIRICAL – «Empirical treatment against cytomegalovirus and tuberculosis in severe pneumonia in HIV-infected infants: a randomized controlled clinical trial”

EMPIRICAL is a research project funded by European and Developing Countries Clinical Trial Partnership (EDCTP) (grant agreement number RIA2017MC) that aims to develop a clinical trial to evaluate whether empirical treatment against cytomegalovirus and tuberculosis improves survival of HIV-infected infants with severe pneumonia.
